FULL FRONTAL:  a male view of the male figure

September 7th to October 15th, 2007

Closing Reception: Saturday, October 13, 5-9pm

Despite the evolution and broadening of male identities in today’s rapidly changing cultural environment, the specific image of a naked man remains taboo in our society – especially when it is in public view. For example, the penis of a naked male figure featured in The Ohlone Mural (Oakland, CA) has been vandalized on multiple occasions and is now permanently obscured.

Why do we Americans experience such visceral reactions to the image of a naked man? Are we ready to expand our view of men in general and specifically the male figure? And, what are men’s views of all this?

Struck by these questions, curator Carl Wolf has invited six male artists to confront this taboo for an upcoming show at the Esteban Sabar Gallery. FULL FRONTAL: a male view of the male figure will explore America and it’s reaction to the male figure, as well as
gaze directly at the inner workings, the deeper aspects of the male psyche.

Public preview begins on 07 September 2007 as part of the First Friday Art Walk in Oakland, California. An Artists' Reception formally opens the exhibition on 08 September 2007, 5-9pm.
