Scott Hove
West Oakland artist Scott Hove introduces us to a lyrical world of figures and architecture through a set of large paintings and to an alternate, nightmarish place through growling cakes.
Hove’s monumental paintings have a light, open feel through an economy of deliberate brush strokes and colors to conjure figures in landscapes and celebratory, vaguely oriental townscapes.
Hove’s cake sculptures, which draw from the crafts of cake decoration and taxidermy, bare sets of wolf like teeth among layers frosting and cake, exploiting viewers’ ingrained childhood chills fostered by fairy tales that combine seductive sugar and physical danger.
Donna Mendes
Transitional urban landscapes of New York and California dominate much of painter Donna Mendes’ recent paintings, which depict decaying buildings, pealing paint and store signs tagged with graffiti. Her work depicts the urban calm before the storm of gentrification, focusing our attention on an unconventionally beautiful, vanishing cityscape.

Doggie High . Oil on canvas by Donna Mendes. |
She counterpoints her transitional cityscapes with contemplations on an organic world that reasserts itself in an urban environment in the form of grass pushing through concrete and decaying leaves scattered on sidewalks.
Marty McCorkle
Artist Marty McCorkle transforms the physical form by wedding digital imagery with traditional paint on canvas to offer a balancing act between representational and abstract painting.

Men with Tapers. Oil on canvas by Marty McCorkle. |
Promiscuous in the sources for his imagery, which run from studio models to Kurosawa film stills, McCorkle enlivens figurative painting by invading the digital world.
