Artists Diego Rios, Bernadette Sale and Liz Amini-Holmes share the cryptic imagery of outsiders‘ perspectives in exhibitions at Esteban Sabar Gallery from October 6th to November 1st, 2006.
Solo Show: Mixed Media Paintings by Diego Rios
Diego Rios paints iconic figures and apocalyptic landscapes based on what he has seen in the form of urban violence, police brutality, and other symptoms of inequalities and injustices in society.
An ambiguous figure rising in the apocalyptic “Green Sleep” is embraced by an angel composed of both flames and animals, while closer inspection of “Lincoln Fire” reveals that this craggy portrait of the venerable president is composed of dozens medieval-manuscript inspired creatures.
Solitude: Oil Paintings by Bernadette Vergara Sale
Emerging artist, Bernadette Vergara Sale contemplates individuality, childhood, and loneliness through urban depictions. This genuine “outsider” artist delivers rough canvases that conjure vignettes of somber nostalgia and honest recollections of imperfect times.
Telling Stories: Acrylic Paintings by Liz Amini-Holmes
Plunging confidently into symbolism, Liz Amini-Holmes fishes out imagery evocative of the Symbolists of the 19th century. Amini-Holmes creates moody, fairy tale beckoning to the two ends of life, childhood and death.
In “Lilith,” a destruction goddess’s hair contains a burning village. Through her image of “Golem,” Amini-Holmes transforms a Hebrew fairy tale of a mud-creature that serves mankind into a protective house that bears face and hands.
This exhibit runs from October 6th to November 1st, 2006.
